Saturno Keihin

Hello Folks
Does anyone have any experience if fitting a Keihin FCR carb to a Saturno?. Specifically an FCR39 to a 350?.

I thought as much. All of the photo's of 350's with FCR39's fitted have been from Japan, or of Japanese bikes in Australia and NZ. Not to worry, I may experiment with jetting on the standard carb. I read with great interest your notes on the differences between German and Italian specification 500's, I may have a play around. My bike is running well, I think over 90%, so it would mean fine tuning, perhaps one step up or down in pilot or main jet to experiment. I have a K&N filter fitted, that may have some effect. If I see a decent FCR for sale I might just take the plunge and buy it then try to set up the jetting.
I know you can buy replica FCR's, made in China I think, but I'm rather concerned about the quality.
The plug colour was good, but now that I have a thermostat fitted and it's running at the correct temperature that might have changed, so I'll check.
There's always something to do!.

Hi Alan,

A little off topic, but may I ask where you got your thermostat? My 500 IOM has no thermostat element fitted and I've been unable to source one.

I purchased my 500 IOM from a friend here in Perth who has connections in Japan and has imported quite a few bikes including a few Saturnos. MIne was one of these, and was running with an FCR39 previously but now with the original PHM 40 Dellorto again. I can ask my friend how he had it set up, although it will be for 500 of course and not 350, and also the bike has a 12.5:1 piston.

Please excuse me for not replying sooner.
I got my thermostat from Bob Wright, and even then it was a used one, all he had. I have seen some complete thermostat housings, with thermostat in place on the Australian Ebay?, worth a look there?.

I have noticed that although my 350 is running well with the original carb, to go to wide open throttle is just a waste of time, it makes more noise but doesn't go any faster! When I got my bike, it had a small pod filter fitted, along with a 140 main jet, the original is 128 I believe, I wonder if it may be worth fitting the 140 back. I now have a K&N large pod style filter. When we come out of lockdown it will probably be springtime!. I'll ride it with WOT and slowly pull the choke on, if it goes better then there is my answer perhaps. Of course, I may be expecting too much from my little engine, but it does go remarkably well for a 350CC, even without wide open throttle.

Yes, you were correct, WOT, Wide Open Throttle.
I'm actually very happy with the way my little 350 rides, it's an involving fun bike. It's so difficult to find any information about them, and I just wanted to make sure mine was running at as close to optimum performance as I could get it.
I think for me 350cc or thereabouts is a perfect capacity, I like the "feeling" of going fast, especially through the corners, whether or not I actually am going fast, I'm not so concerned about. The grin factor is important for me.
I agree with your philosophy, and your statement about the engine perhaps not lasting so long is accurate, I would rather have a reliable engine.
