On my 1960's Sears / Gilera 106cc (American version of the 98cc), is has oil drain and fill plugs made of bronze. Any ideas why? It's more expensive than carbon steel or stainless, and I can't think of why bronze would be advantageous there.

interesting question :)

Even the 'new' Gileras have this brass oil plug.
Old italian tradition?
An member of the 'family' who treated Lugi to buy the expensive brass from him?
Problems with steel plugs in the aluminium case?
But why then have other motorcycles and cars steel plugs?
Questions about questions...

ciao Joachim

Joachim,

When you say "new" Gileras still have them, how new?

Bob Wright, the Gilera seller from the UK, says that Gilera was using them as far back as the 1950's. British bikes weren't. I have a 1960's Benelli with a steel pug, so maybe it's a feature of the Gilera brand.
