Kreem is a good solution. It comes with a degreaser, a deruster and the sealing itself.
It is a mess (you have to heat up all these liquids over a time) to seal a tank by yourself, but it's worth.
I have done it twice. My Saturno #uno tank in '91 and on my old ('78) Y****a
I have just ordered a set for the second GFR fuel tank.
Be carefull (if you will do the work) the deruster is something like phosporic acid.
It will rapidly eat up your new painting if you manage to bring some of this stuff on your tank !
I prefer to seal the tank inside *before* starting the paint job

Yes..... you have reason.
Just now I've realized that I've done a big mistake!
When I've found rust into my tank, last year, I've just used a powerful vacuum cleaner to leave out rust, and no other solution....
I thought that just leave out rust it could solve my problem. Tank was unused for 17 years, stored into a garage.
I thought that after my restore, costantly using my XR1, with fuel into tank, no more rust can form into.....
Well.... now fuel tank it's repainted and with new stickers.
I think that during those operation, like transport, painting.... and others, some rust was detached from the inside faces of tank....
A good treatment with a product like "Tankerite" or similar it's better....
I think that I'll do it if I'll have a very big problem into carburetor.
Actually I've placed an auxiliary fuel filter between fuel tank and carburetor....

Maybe you will have another problem. There are people out the whic hare searching XRT fuel tanks because of pin holes!

Actually I've placed an auxiliary fuel filter between fuel tank and carburetor....

Eh! Sure! They are both fresh painted by "Motopaint"!!!!
Three months ago I've found in eBay a guy of Magenta (quite near my town) that have a complete (about) Gilera XR1 in parts!!!
And I've took everything!
Two tanks are, the first of my XR1, and the second eBay-provenience!
Now I've painted both.....
.... and about inside..... I hope no holes in future!!!!

all the rust on the floor is out of your fueltank??

Only to put fuel into the tank again will not solve the problem. When you don't drive your bike for a while, water will seperate out of the modern fuels and will sink on the bottom of the tank. Thats one reason for holes in fueltanks.

Joachim - I don't think that Marco will get so much rust out of the tank by his own. Some people who have done it by themselves have more problems than before because the colour peels from the inside of the tank again. Maybe its better to get help from a professional?

I got my saturno fueltank back two weeks ago. The problem was: the tank is divided into several parts inside and one part has to be opened from the lower surface to get it clean. But I got it back without any scratches on the outside!! Ok - it wasn't cheap... But I'm very happy with it.

Yes, all rust that you can see in pics it's of my fuel tank. And this is the second time that I leave out rust from inside of my fuel tank......

Yes, I agree.... but:
- actually there is no more rust-rubble into my fuel tank; I leave out it by a powerful industrial vacuum; when I've done it I've used to knock a little all sides of fuel tank; in this way I think to have leave out a good part of rust that was again attacked on internal sides of fuel tanks....... (I hope!)

- Gilera XR1 have a..... particular fuel tank; I mean that fuel tank have low part divided in two lobes, one on the left and one on the right of the cylinder; well.... the lower parts of those lobes are..... lower of fuel tap! So in those kind of fuel tank, it's usual to have water into, especially in those two lobes......
- this is why I've used two times industrial vacuum, and I've not tryed mostly to protect inside parts of tank... (ok it's debatable, I know...)

- those lobes of fuel tank will be like two little bags where dirty, rust and water will fall into.......

Well I'll see what happens....
After that maybe I could think to cut my fuel tank and restore it...
Before that... Eh! I've an other new fuel tank to use in case of..... holes!!!!!

Hi Marco,
if you want to remove rust from the inside of a tank you have to take
a handfull of nuts and screws and waschers,throw them into the tank
and add some petroleum and than shake it for a while.That will help
you to remove the rust from the inside.

Yes, I've thought an operation like this.... but, there is always the same problem:
the particular fuel tank of Gilera XR1..... where there is low part divided in two lobes,.....
.....and the lower parts of those lobes are..... lower of fuel tap....
So if I introduce in this kind of fuel tank nuts and screws.... well it's very difficult to leave out it!!!

Hi Marco,
you don't have to leave those nuts etc out throug the Patroltap,
you just turn the tank upside down and shake them out troug the inlet,
and if some remain in the tank it will make no ricesackfull fall down in china.
